Stefan,

It looks like your Exchange 2013 is on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 installation.

- Is this your Exchange 2013 on the latest CU3?
- Is the Windows 2008 R2 SP1 a domain controller?
- Are you using the administrator account to run CloudBacko Pro?

You mentioned you had a Java crash. Can you post the Java crash log for us?

It should be located in the "C:\Program Files\CloudBacko Pro" or "C:\Program Files\CloudBacko Pro\bin" folder. The java crash log file is usually called hs_err_pidxxxx.log.

Stefan,

CloudBacko Pro officially supports database backups for Exchange 2013 from Exchange 2013 CU3 or above.

Please let us know if you have any further problems with the database backup set creation or backup jobs, after updating to Exchange 2013 CU3.

Updating to Exchange 2013 CU3 doesn´t solve the error.

Stefan,

We done some further research on your CloudBacko crash problem. It seems to be related to the Microsoft .NET Framework version on your Exchange 2013 Server.

Can you check in [Control Panel] -> [Programs and Features] your current Microsoft .NET Framework version?

Please make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.5 installed. If you already have it installed, please send us a screen shot of the applications in your Control Panel] -> [Programs and Features]

Stefan,

As CloudBacko is crashing due "Fault Module Name:mscorwks.dll", which is Microsoft .NET Framework DLL.

Can you try re-installing your Microsoft .NET Framework?

- Just to confirm the Exchange 2013 server is a productions machine? All relevant Exchange related services are running?
- Are no Exchange related errors in Windows Application event logs?
- Are there any other third party backup software installed on this Windows 2008 R2 machine?
- Do you mind send us a screenshot of the Exchange Admin Centre?

CloudBacko bJW.exe does not use .Net Framework 2.0.

Looks like this may explain the crash. Please can you uninstall .Net Framework 2.0 from your Exchange 2013.

Isn´t there another solutions? There are still apps on the server using .net Framework 2.0.

Any updates/news on this?

I installed Exchange server 2013 SP1 today, but still the same problem..
I´d really like to buy your software as I like it, but I need to have a working exchange backup solution.

Thanks in advance.

Stefan,

Thank you for the info you sent us.

We have been working on reproducing your problem but so far, the only way your problem can be reproduced is if we break Exchange 2013. So this is still under investigation.

BTW, we released an updated CloudBack beta version includes many critical fixes and enhancements. Can you try out this version?

Thanks. Just installed the update. Unfortunately the error is still the same.
What do you mean with "break Exchange 2013"? What are you doing to reproduce the issue? Maybe this will help me finding the issue if it´s in my exchange installation.

By the way, we have done nothing special. Just a clean install of Exchange 2013 with SP1 and CU3 works perfectly. There is no special trick required. Do you have another Exchange server you can try ?

Hello Michael,

As the original error was reported on Windows 2008 R2 server with Exchange 2013.

- Can you clarify if your on Windows 2012 or 2012 R2?
- Can you tell which version of CloudBacko Pro this error is occurring on?
- Is the Windows 2012 machine a domain controller?
- Is Exchange 2013 a new installation or upgraded from a previous version?
- Are you using the administrator account to run CloudBacko Pro?
- Do you mind posting the details of the Java crash from your machine?

Thanks for the reply.

- We're running Windows 2012.
- I've tried 1.5.0 and 1.5.2.0
- Yes the box is the domain controller.
- Fresh install of windows 2012 and exchange 2013 about 6 months ago.
- I was successfully running backups under a backup user, i've tried running under the administrator and i get the same result.

I've got no log files hs_err_pidxxxx.log or similar on the server, any ideas for other log files to look for

Cheers.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for the logs.

Looks like CloubBacko Pro is crashing when it is trying to create a VSS snapshot of the Exchange 2013 database in preparation for the database backup job.

- Can you please take a look at the Windows Event logs around this time 2014/08/15 10:48:09 for any VSS related errors?

Can you share with us some more details of your Exchange server setup?
- Are there any other backup software installed on this machine?
- How large is the Exchange database?
- How much free disk space is there on the C drive and on the Exchange database volume?
- Is the Exchange database located on a Volume Mount point?

Re: Java error (CloudBacko crashes when creating an Exchange 2013 CU3 database backup set on Windows 2008 R2)

Hi rafael,

No Other backup software installed.
The exchange databases are around 50gb,
Currently there is about 80gb free on c:

There are no errors in the event log. I see a summary of ShadowCopy running through each of the mail stores and freezing them, doing its snapshot and then thawing them. The only error i see is the bjw.exe runtime error.

Hello Michael,

As CloudBacko Pro is crashing when it is trying to when "Start creating Shadow Copy Set ..", we like to completely rule out any Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) issues on the Exchange 2013 server which maybe affecting the backup job.

1. Do you mind re-registering the Volume Shadow Copy on the Exchange 2013 server by running the C:\Program Files\CloudBacko Pro\bin\RegisterVSS.bat file

2. After re-registering VSS on your Exchange 2013 server, please reboot the machine for the settings to take effect.

3. Can you run a "vssadmin list writers" and post the results?

Interestingly even though that failed, after a restart of the microsoft replication service and the cryptographic services the backups seem to be running again. Let me know if you'd like me to provide any further details.

Cheers.

Hello Michael,

Just want to clarify you have already:

1. Re-registered VSS.
2. Rebooted the Exchange 2013 server.

The Exchange 2013 database backups are now running with crashing?
