Only one successful backup to Google Disk, then all subsequent backups fail

Postby cloggy » Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:56 pm

Hi, I was able to only run one successful backup to GDrive, all other backups fail. Below a copy of the last failure:

This problem drives me nuts and was also the reason I completely de- and re-installed the program but it did not help. My other backup job (a copy to the D-Disk of my PC and a copy to my NAS server) runs fine. But this GDrive backup is a a pain in the....

Here is some information of one of the failing backups:

Hi Dick,

Can you go to perform an integrity check on the backup set for the cloud storage destination.

Please refer to the following post viewtopic.php?f=58&t=81 for details on how to perform an integrity check.

Depending on the connection speed and the number of files and folders on the cloud drive, this process could a a few hours.

Once completed, please try running the backup job again.

Hi,, will do so and let you know the results.

Note that I have another PC also having problems making backup to a Google Drive, local backups (NAS share and another partition on the PC's HDD run fine)..

Hi, almost immediately after I started the Integrity Check got the error message "Index for destination "GDrive-1" of backup set "Google" is found to be corrupt. It is required to delete all data in this destination to fix the problem. Do you want to do so? (Error= "[e] [IntegrityCheck.checkintegrity]Index corrupted, caused by [RuntimeException][BackupFileIterator.Combined.hasNext]...etc etc.

Note that Continues Backups to the Google Drive runs mostly fine.

As my Google backup is about 48GB, it's going to take days to get this resolved. Hopefully there is another solution by keeping all backed up data else I wonder if I will continue using this products and look around for an alternative that is more reliable.

Regards,
Dick

..a Continues Backup for this Google Disk was just fired off, copied an *.ost file and completed successfully. How come this one can finish successfully while the daily backup always fail...? This is a bit weird to me and makes me think that deleting all data on the Google Disk will not be the final solution.

Note that I discovered that all failed jobs occurred when it needed to copy the Outlook .pst file....maybe this can help? And to make it even more weird, it's not always failing as sometimes *.pst file were successfully copied.

I've done some more research and when I exclude the Outlook .PST file, the backup jobs run fine. I'll dig into this a bit further and let you know..

I've been playing with it a bit more but the *.PST file doesn't seem to be the culprit. when I run a backup to the Google Disk, almost immediately after creation of the Shadow Copy set and start reading the source, it fails again...sigh.

I give up..

Hi Dick,

Thank you for the update.

- Can you take a look at your Windows event log for any Volume shadow copy related errors at the time of the backup job?
- How large is the outlook.pst file? Are the other files in the backup set of similar size?
- You mentioned the backup on another machine is also failing with same error? Are the files of similar size?
- What is the speed of your internet connection? Both upload and download speed?
- At the time of the backup errors was the other machine also backing up to Google Drive?

Hi,

Some answers to your questions:
1) There are no VSS errors in the Windows Event log.
2) I have a backup job which consists of 2 activities: one backup to the other partition on the HDD and one that makes the same backup (with regards to folders & files) to the NAS server. These backup jobs, which are also using VSS are running fine without any error over the last 4 days.
2) The second backup job, again for the same folders & files as the aforementioned one, to my Google Disk fails almost constantly.
3) The size of my PST file is about 144MB
4) My D/L speed is 90Mb/s and upload is 9Mb/s
5) The other PC, where to local and NAS backups also run fine, has a PST file of 2,5 GB and is connected to its own Google Disk but is showing the same problems/erros.

Note that all backup jobs/activities have the same folders & files selected for their backup.

So, bottom line, all backups but to the Google Disk are running fine and without any errors which make me believe that the setup to the Google Disk is incorrect.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Just two more questions, you mentioned the backup set is around 48GB in size. How large is your Google drive? How much free space is there currently?

We like to get some more information on the errors for the restore of the backup jobs on the Window 8 (DHOME) machine. It is possible to zip all the backup logs and either attach them to this thread or on a FTP server/Dropbox shared folder?

The logs can be found in the "C:\users\{%username%}\.cbl\log\1398039392532\Backup" folder on your machine.

Hi, both my wife's and my Google Disk are 100GB each. I have still left 48GB but do not forget that probably over 90% of my files have been backed up to my Google Disk. I've sent you a PM where to download the requested log files.

Thanks...Dick

Hi, I've reshuffled my backups and I leave the failing Google Disk backup in case you want me to test any suggestion/solution. I've created a new destination in my backup and I'm backing up to Dropbox for the time being till the Google issue has been resolved. Once there is some more clarity about this issue, I'll delete the current Google backup and will start a new one.

FYI, the Google backup problems I had with my wife's PC have been resolved..I'm only backing up the Outlook .PST file that is in the ~user\Documents\Outlook File\ folder and unselected the one that is in the ....\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ folder. Since then the backup job runs fine...

Hi, I've done more testing and the only destination that is giving problems is when a backup is made to a Google Drive. All other destinations, like local HDD, Synology NAS, Dropbox, are running fine but as soon as the destination is a Google Drive, the problems start and in particular when *.PST and/or *.OST files need to be backup up.... Other file types might go fine but the result is unpredictable, but as soon as *.PST and/or OST files need to be backed up up, you can wait for the failure. So, I think the problem is a bug in your Google Drive interface.

One more enhancement advise: whenever the backup to a destination is giving errors, the progress bar should not remain green but immediately turn into red, indicating that something has gone wrong.

Hi Dick,

Thank you for the update.

Our developers are looking into the problem. They suspect there is a issue with handling of re-connections to Google Drive when there are network problems between the CloudBacko machine and Google Drive.

Hi Dick,

The fix for the Google Drive issue will be available in the up coming version of CloudBacko v1.5.0.0. Which will be released around July 2014.

Around July???? You must be kidding. That is too long and as I did not receive any reactions last week, I've implemented another program on both PCs by now that is running fine and fast with less overhead (it's not using Java at all)...the only thing it doesn't do is encrypting the file/folder names but the files themselves are encrypted with 256bit AES but as they are not being backup up to Google Disk but to Amazon Cold Storage, I'm not so much concerned.
And note it it can do a Hybrid backup, so backup to a local destination and to Amazon at the same time..

I'm sorry I have to share this with you...

Hi Dick,

The next official CloudBacko release v1.5.0.0 not only contains the fix for the Google drive issue you reported but includes other fixes and feature enhancements. As it is an official release, it will have to pass strict QA cycles before it is fit for general release which will require some time to complete.
