License Violation ESXi 6 Free (#11997) [SOLVED]

Postby edificom » Thu Sep 03, 2015 5:59 pm

Hello,

We are getting license alerts saying we need to buy the full VMware modules, but we are backing up 3x ESXi Free editions which should be included.

Please could you advise.

Many thanks,

Hi edificom,

Can you tell us what version of CloudBacko Pro you are currently running?

We can see from the screen shot a free license is in use. Can you let us know if you have ever used any other keys on this ESXi server and if so, can you advise if this was a paid license or eval key?

As far as I know, the ESXi servers always had the same license, but there is a chance that it was originally built with an evaluation license, but I can't confirm this as the person who built this isn't available.

In this case, can you try entering the following on a browser

https://{esxi_server_IP_Address}/mob/?moid=ha-license-manager&doPath=licenses

After you logged, you should see details for "licenseKey" & "name" with details of the key and license type. Could you check and advise us if it shows a free license or any other key?

Hmmm...that doesn't seem to work for me:

503 Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [N7Vmacore4Http20NamedPipeServiceSpecE:0x1f073a00] _serverNamespace = /mob _isRedirect = false _pipeName =/var/run/vmware/proxy-mob)

Seems MOB is disabled by default. Can you re-enable this? Please have a look at the article by virtuallyghetto http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2015/02/ ... i-6-0.html for details on how to do this.

Thank for the details.

Assuming that the backup set was created while ESXi was using the free license. Can you advise if the backup set was created recently? what version of CloudBacko Pro you are using? Would it be possible to pm me the license key in use so we can check record of the vm module use?

About the license for ESXi, we would normally see a "esxBasic.vram" value for the free version. As this differs, we believe this is why CloudBacko believes this is a paid version. Currently checking on this with our development team. Will get back to you monday to advise if the editionkey detail is the problem.

Hi edificom,

Just want to give you an update. Was able to reproduce the problem you are seeing using the free license that provides us with the same editionKey value you are getting. Currently working with our development team on this and will get back to you with further updates.

Hello,

Over the weekend the backup server stopped working as the licenses were not correct. It gave us the option of 14 extra days, which I clicked, and so hopefully we will get some backups this evening.

Do you have any options for us from the developers yet?

Many thanks

Hi there,

We have an hotfix which would help resolve this issue. Please note that you would need to remove your existing VMware backup set, as they are using the VDDK mode that is only available for the paid modules.

To resolve the issue please can you do the following.

1. Ensure that you are on v1.11.2.0
2. Download hotfix from http://cdn.cloudbacko.com/support/cb-al ... k11997.zip
3. Shutdown CloudBacko Windows Services
4. Expand the files inside cb-all-hotfix-task11997.zip to "C:\Program Files\CloudBacko Pro"
5. Startup CloudBacko Windows Services

After this, you should be able to start up CloudBacko Pro and create a new VMware backup set which should now correctly identify the ESXi v6 Free license and use VMDK files for backup.

Thank you.

I have followed your instructions, and it looks like there is no error under the license section.

I will run the backups tonight and log back and see how things are.

Many thanks.

Hello,

Sorry to report but today we are receiving the same licensing error messages as before.

It says we have until the 22nd to resolve.

Hi,

Just want to confirm. Have you removed the previous 3 backup sets that you created before applying the hotfix? If not, then they would still use VDDK mode which will use the module. Do you mind copying the system logs to Dropbox, OneDrive, Google drive etc and share the link on this thread for us to download? If you prefer, you can pm me the link.

Please refer to our FAQ "Where are the CloudBacko backup and restore logs located?" viewtopic.php?f=58&t=233

Hi,

When I checked today, it seems the license issue has been resolved. I don't know if it took some time to take effect, or needed a server reboot...but now it all looks good.

:-)

Many thanks for your help.
