Cloudbacko on ESXi 6 (#11997) [SOLVED]

Postby mattiteppo12 » Tue May 05, 2015 6:08 pm

I received a license violation error after upgrading to ESXi 6.0 (free version). My license is in place (not in trial mode).

What is the schedule for Cloudbacko to idenfity 6.0 correctly as free ESXi?

Hello,

Backup/restore of guest on VMware ESXi 6 is currently not officially supported. At the moment we cannot provide a exact time line.

Our normal practice is to support new versions of our supported applications/platforms within 3 months after they have become generally available.

Thank you for the reply, I assume it should be solved some time during summer then. I don't really have a problem with ESXi 6 not being officially supported, but rather the issue that it gets tagged as paid version rather than free.

Would it be possible to change the software in the future to allow version number changes, yet still confirm ESXi license types instead of the current model?

My license seems to have been deactivated because I backed up ESXi 6 versioned server. I removed all backups and data, but the license check seems to be very inaccurate (I don't know if I have to open the software for it to run again?).

Can you please check this issue and reactivate my license.

Hi,

To look into this, could you pm me your license key details.

Also, if you have removed the backup set and the license check if still reporting an issue then can you advise if you have tried restarting your CloudBacko Pro service or rebooted the machine?

I will deliver the license details to you.

I don't restart the machine in question very often, but it should have been restarted after the problem occurred and was fixed. I don't usually open the software itself, could this be the reason why the check never re-triggered?

Hi jonohayes,

Could you provide some details of your issue?

- Do you mean that you have an issue with license violation with ESXi 6 free?
- or that you getting violation for another module?
- Can you advise the version of CloudBacko you are using?
- is the key deactivated?
- is the key used on multiple machines?

To help look into this further, can you PM me your key details and the proof of purchase details please.

Hi jonohayes,

Just had a look at the license record and it appears that the problem is with the VM backup that causing the problem. It is listed as a paid model rather than using the free model for ESXi Free.

Can you advise if the backup set was created while running on a previous version? if so, can you advise which version? Also, was this created why running CloudBacko as a trial?

Do you mind sending us a screen shot of the license details. You can find this under vSphere [Configuration] -> [License Features]. Just to check on the licensing and confirm this is not a eval version.

Hi jonohayes,

Have not heard back from you in some time and wanted to check with you on the issue with the ESXi 6 using free license. Does the problem persist?

Hi jonohayes,

Just wanted to update you that we have found that CloudBacko was not identifying the free license on ESXi correctly and this has now been resolved in a hotfix. Please note that you need to remove the existing vmware backup set that was created before the hotfix as they will be using VDDK mode that is only available on the paid modules. Once the backup set has been removed, and you use the following steps to resolve this issue.

1. Ensure that you are on v1.11.2.0
2. Download hotfix from http://cdn.cloudbacko.com/support/cb-al ... k11997.zip
3. Shutdown CloudBacko Windows Services
4. Expand the files inside cb-all-hotfix-task11997.zip to "C:\Program Files\CloudBacko Pro"
5. Startup CloudBacko Windows Services

Once the hotfix has been applied, you can then startup CloudBacko to create a new VMware backup set which should now correctly identify the ESXi v6 Free license and use VMDK files for backup.

Hi jonohayes,

Just wanted to let you know that the latest version of 1.11.4.0 has been released which also contains the fix that addresses the licensing issue of ESXi 6(Free). For details on how to check if you are on the latest version & update, please refer to the following FAQ "How do I update my CloudBacko installation to the latest version?" viewtopic.php?f=58&t=73
